If you’re a soccer parent feeling overwhelmed by the demands and confusion that comes with navigating youth soccer, you're not alone. It’s hard to know where to turn when you have questions or need support. Here are 5 common questions youth soccer parents ask, along with tips and resources to support your child’s soccer journey.

Top Questions Soccer Parents Ask to Help their Child

ONE: How do I choose the right soccer club for my child?

Choosing the right soccer club is crucial for your child's development and enjoyment. Consider factors like the club's coaching philosophy, training methods, player development focus, team culture, and cost.

Visit team practices, especially for your players' age group, when possible to observe the training environment and coaching methodology. Be sure to interact with coaches and other soccer parents, ask questions. It’s also helpful to research online reviews and seek recommendations from other parents in your community.

RESOURCE: Most states have a youth soccer association that has a listing of clubs. Simply search the Internet for “STATE youth soccer clubs” or “Listing of youth soccer clubs in STATE.” Also visit https://www.usyouthsoccer.org/ for an overview of different youth soccer programs and a link to a state youth soccer page with additional information.

TWO: How can I help my child become a better soccer player?

Consistent practice is key. Encourage your child to practice regularly, even if it's just for short periods. Simple drills like juggling, dribbling around cones, and shooting practice can be done at home. Consider purchasing a small goal for backyard practice.

RESOURCES:

  • Use instructional videos that can be found on YouTube to help your child focus on certain skills. One channel we subscribe to is Progressive Soccer. They also provide a more structured training program, if interested.

  • Find local youth soccer opportunities, including futsal, pick-ups, trainings, free sessions and more.

  • Consider a low cost soccer goal journal for your soccer player to set goals and track their progress.

THREE: How can I support my child's mental toughness in soccer?

Building resilience, confidence, and the ability to perform under pressure is a vital skill that is often overlooked. To help support the mental side of soccer, focus on effort and improvement rather than just results. Celebrate small victories and encourage them to learn from mistakes. Teach them to focus on their own performance and not compare themselves to others.

RESOURCE: If your players performance and/or joy of the game is negatively affected by their thoughts and feelings, you may want to consider a mindset coach. If interested, do your research. Two that you could consider researching are Beyond Goals Mentoring and Soccer Resilience. Find a related blog here: How to Build Resilience in Youth Soccer Players.

FOUR: How can I communicate effectively with my child's soccer coach?

When communicating with a youth soccer coach, it should go without saying to be respectful while you start to establish open communication. Begin with scheduling a meeting at a mutually convenient time when you and your coach can focus on the chat. When meeting:

Be Prepared and Be Specific: Clearly and concisely state your concerns or questions. Avoid generalizations and focus on specific observations. For example, instead of saying "My child isn't getting enough playing time," try saying, "I've noticed that my child hasn't had many opportunities to play in the last few games. Can you provide some feedback on their performance and how they can improve?" Do not talk about other players.

Focus on Solutions and Be Open to the Feedback: Don’t complain, focus on finding solutions. Work with your soccer coach to identify areas for improvement and discuss potential strategies for your child to increase their playing time or develop specific skills. Listen to the coach's perspective and be open to their feedback.

Show Appreciation: Thank the coach for their time and insights. Express your support for the team and your commitment to working together to help your soccer player succeed. If warranted, ask to touch base in a couple of weeks to discuss progress towards their suggestions.

FIVE: How can I help my child develop and maintain their love for the game?

For many young soccer players, the love of the game is what fuels their passion and drives them to succeed. As a soccer parent, you play a crucial role in fostering this love and ensuring soccer remains a positive and enjoyable experience.

Focus on the Fun: Remember why your child started playing soccer in the first place. Was it the thrill of scoring a goal? The camaraderie of teammates? The joy of running freely on the field? Encourage them to embrace these aspects of the game and find the fun in every practice and game.

Celebrate Achievements: Every player has unique strengths and experiences success in different ways. Celebrate their individual achievements, whether it's scoring a goal, making a crucial save, or simply showing improvement in their skills. These small victories not only fosters their love of soccer, it builds confidence.

Building Friendships: Encourage your child to connect with their teammates off the field, social events or playdates can strengthen friendships and create lasting memories.

Prioritize Balance: Soccer should be a part of a balanced life. Create a realistic schedule that includes time for schoolwork, soccer practice and games, rest, and other non-soccer activities.
